This white-and-gold prothesis table is a piece of liturgical church furniture intended for preparing bread and wine before the celebration of the Divine Liturgy. It is used during the Proskomedia in the sanctuary of an Orthodox or Greek Catholic church.

The prothesis table is traditionally placed behind the iconostasis on the northern side of the sanctuary. When viewed from the nave, it is positioned to the left of the main Holy Table. It is not the principal altar but a separate liturgical place dedicated to preparing the Eucharistic gifts.

The front features two doors decorated with prominent gold crosses. White panels are complemented by gold trim, shaped columns and gold decorative details. The white-and-gold colour combination creates a solemn appearance and allows the table to be coordinated with the Holy Table, iconostasis and other church furnishings.

What is a prothesis table?

A prothesis table is a separate liturgical table or cabinet located in the sanctuary. It is used during the Proskomedia for preparing the bread and wine that are later transferred to the main Holy Table during the Divine Liturgy.

The prothesis table should not be confused with the principal Holy Table. The Holy Table stands in the centre of the sanctuary, while the prothesis table is traditionally positioned on its northern side.

Care instructions

Clean the surface with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not use rough sponges, abrasive cleaners, solvents or aggressive chemicals.

Remove spilled liquids immediately and wipe the surface dry. Protect the product from direct contact with water, excessive moisture and sudden temperature changes.
